You could argue that hockey goaltending has changed more over time than any position in all of pro sports. Today’s goalies are far advanced over their predecessors in terms of physical fitness and stature, and they are armed with technology and technique that make them look like they’re in another sport compared with the one their forebears played.

At the same time, data collection for goaltending is sparse, to put it mildly. Save percentage, a baseline statistic, was not recorded until 1955-56.

It is practically fruitless, then, to compare Tuukka Rask’s latest season, for example, to one of Tiny Thompson’s heyday in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Hockey-Reference has practically thrown up its hands. The site, invaluable at adjusting scoring for forwards and defensemen to account for different eras, does not attempt to flatten puck-stopping performances.

We will, nevertheless, persist. With statistics being somewhat of a guide, here are the top 10 seasons by Bruins goalies in team history.
