BREAKING NEWS: Georgia Bulldogs to Erect Statue at Sanford Stadium Honoring Herschel Walker for His Legacy and Impact on Franchise Greatness

Athens, GA – May 12, 2025 — In a move decades in the making, the University of Georgia has announced it will erect a statue of legendary running back Herschel Walker outside Sanford Stadium. The announcement marks a historic and symbolic recognition of the man who redefined Georgia football, led the Bulldogs to a national championship, and remains the gold standard for athletic excellence in Athens.

Set to be unveiled on October 11, 2025 — coinciding with Georgia’s homecoming game against Auburn — the statue will stand on the west plaza of Sanford Stadium, becoming a permanent fixture honoring the most decorated player in program history. Designed by acclaimed sculptor Brian Hanlon, the bronze statue will depict Walker in his signature running style, helmet slightly tilted, legs pumping, and defenders grasping at air.

The university’s Board of Regents unanimously approved the project, which is expected to cost $500,000 and will be funded entirely through private donations and booster contributions.

“A Bulldog for the Ages”

“There has never been a more iconic figure in Georgia football than Herschel Walker,” said UGA President Jere Morehead at Monday’s press conference. “His impact on this university and on college football is immeasurable. This statue ensures that his legacy will stand not just in the record books, but right here at Sanford Stadium for generations of fans to admire.”

Walker, who was present at the ceremony, appeared visibly moved by the honor. “It’s humbling,” he said. “To think about the kid I was growing up in Wrightsville, Georgia, and to now be recognized like this — it’s truly a blessing. Georgia gave me everything, and I gave Georgia everything I had.”

The statue will stand alongside the newly constructed “Legends Plaza,” a developing project that will feature commemorative installations celebrating the greatest players and moments in Bulldogs history. But Walker’s monument will be the first and the centerpiece — a testament to his singular place in Georgia lore.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Herschel Walker’s career statistics are the stuff of legend. In just three seasons (1980–1982), Walker rushed for 5,259 yards — still a school record — and scored 52 rushing touchdowns. He averaged 159 yards per game and posted 28 career 100-yard rushing games. In an era of stacked defensive fronts and power football, Walker was nearly unstoppable.

In 1980, his freshman year, Walker led the Bulldogs to a perfect 12-0 season and a national championship victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Despite separating his shoulder early in that game, Walker carried the ball 36 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns — a performance now etched in college football folklore.

He finished third in Heisman voting as a freshman, second as a sophomore, and finally won the award in 1982 as a junior, rushing for 1,752 yards and 16 touchdowns. He then left Georgia early — a rarity at the time — to join the USFL’s New Jersey Generals before eventually moving to the NFL.

A Symbol of Bulldog Greatness

“Herschel didn’t just play football — he inspired people,” said Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks. “When he stepped on the field, he brought a belief that we could beat anybody. That belief became the cornerstone of what Georgia football represents today: strength, pride, and relentless effort.”

Walker’s influence on Georgia’s program extended far beyond his playing days. His name is frequently mentioned in recruiting conversations, and young athletes still study his highlight reels as a blueprint for dominance. Several Georgia alumni and boosters have advocated for a statue for years, with the idea gaining momentum after the Bulldogs’ 2021 and 2022 national championships brought renewed focus on the program’s history and icons.

“Every player who wears the ‘G’ owes something to Herschel,” said former Georgia head coach Vince Dooley’s son, Derek Dooley. “He changed what was possible here. He gave the program its identity.”

Fans and Alumni Celebrate

The announcement sparked celebration throughout the Bulldog community. Social media lit up with tributes, throwback highlights, and testimonials from former teammates and rivals alike.

“I’m glad this day has come,” said former Georgia quarterback Buck Belue, who handed the ball off to Walker countless times during the 1980 season. “Herschel was not only the best player I’ve ever seen — he was the best teammate. It’s fitting he gets this kind of recognition.”

UGA alumni groups from Atlanta to Dallas are planning trips to Athens for the unveiling ceremony, which is expected to draw a massive crowd and be televised nationally.

Looking Ahead

Construction of the statue will begin in early June, with the sculpture already in the final stages of design. Hanlon, the sculptor behind other major collegiate monuments such as Shaquille O’Neal’s statue at LSU and Jackie Robinson’s at UCLA, said the piece will capture Walker’s spirit and intensity.

“This is more than just a statue of an athlete,” Hanlon said. “It’s a tribute to leadership, perseverance, and greatness. Herschel Walker didn’t just carry the football — he carried the hopes of an entire fan base.”

As Georgia eyes another run at a national title in 2025 under head coach Kirby Smart, the timing feels perfect. The Bulldogs are once again a national powerhouse, but they’re also paying homage to the legend who first put them on the map.

“Herschel Walker didn’t just help win games,” said Smart. “He created a culture of excellence that still drives us today. Having his statue outside Sanford Stadium will remind every player who walks through those gates what it means to be a Dawg.”

Final Thoughts

In a world where athletic greatness can sometimes be fleeting, Herschel Walker’s legacy remains ironclad. From his legendary runs between the hedges to his profound impact on the Georgia community, Walker is more than a football player — he’s a symbol of what makes college football special.

With his statue set to rise this fall, Herschel Walker’s story will now live on not just in highlight reels and trophy cases, but in bronze — t

imeless and proud, just like the Bulldogs themselves.
