It’s June 13. The NBA Finals are one Boston Celtics win away from being over. And the Los Angeles Lakers still don’t have a head coach.

The Lakers front office is exercising patience after canning Darvin Ham a month and 10 days ago. But patience eventually runs out, and it appears the team has set a deadline for itself.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers plan to confirm a new head coach before the NBA Draft gets underway on June 26. That gives them just under two weeks to get someone under contract.

James Borrego the favorite to be next Lakers head coach

And if Jake Fischer from Yahoo Sports’ report is to be believed, there’s a new “leading candidate” to land that job: James Borrego.

Borrego is currently an assistant coach for the New Orleans Pelicans under head coach Willie Green. Borrego landed there following a four-year stint at the helm of the Charlotte Hornets. Per Fischer’s report, “Borrego has been credited with boosting New Orleans’ offensive approach during this past season“.

This report comes a few days after Dan Hurley shunned the franchise and chose to stay at UConn instead of taking the opportunity to jump to the NBA.
