Richard Bleier, a former lefty reliever for the Red Sox, is going to D.C.
On Thursday, Bleier, who Boston designated for assignment back in August, signed a contract with the Nationals.
According to a source, Richard Bleier has signed a minor league contract with the Nationals. The 36-year-old left-hander was DFA’d in August after spending the previous season with the Boston Red Sox. over eight major league seasons, a 3.27 ERA.
For the past several springs, Dave Martinez has made jokes about wanting several lefty relievers. They start the season this year with Robert García and Jose A. Ferrer on the 40-man roster. 2023 saw glimpses of promise for both. Bleier also adds depth to the Nats with Joe La Sorsa.
In January 2023, the Red Sox designated Matt Barnes for assignment and then transferred him to the Marlins in exchange for Bleier.
The 36-year-old Bleier made 27 appearances for the Sox. Before being released in August, he was 1-0 with a 5.28 ERA, 1.370 WHIP, and just 16 strikeouts in 30.2 innings for Boston.
